Dr. Porter is board certified in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry and Adult Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Human Biology from Stanford University and her Medical Degree from Meharry Medical College. She received her general psychiatry residency training at Baylor College of Medicine and the University of Illinois at Chicago, where she also completed her fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Dr. Porter has experience in private practice, community child guidance clinics, group homes, long-term State residential facilities, emergency psychiatry, Tele-psychiatry, court-ordered evaluations and issues impacting military families. She believes in a developmental approach to childhood mental health issues. During her initial assessments, she looks at the family dynamics, taking into account the family structure and psychosocial stressors that are impacting the child and the family, and draws from her own personal experiences, professional training and years of practice to develop an individual plan for your child and family. In order to accomplish this, Dr Porter will spend time gathering information from you and your child as well as other sources, with your consent. Dr. Porter believes in a biopsychosocial approach in treatment which in addition to the use of medication, when indicated, includes psychotherapy and social intervention strategies that will support your child and family’s success as you navigate the challenges you are facing. Dr. Porter will typically refer out to individual therapists for additional support; however, she will incorporate brief psychotherapy and crisis management within the session.
